The White Swan in Thornton-le-Clay has been at the heart of village life in this rural Ryedale village for over 200 years.
Successfully run as a thriving establishment until mid-March 2020, The White Swan served the local village communities and farms of Thornton le Clay and nearby Foston, as well as residents from further afield, tourists visiting Ryedale and the nearby Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Other customers were those travelling to the Yorkshire Coast on the nearby A64; all supporting the area’s flourishing visitor economy.
The pub enjoyed an excellent reputation in more recent years for being family and purse-friendly, and serving freshly prepared, locally sourced home-cooked, seasonal dishes, complemented by a large range of drinks, including cask ales and good wines. Customers could also enjoy a drink at the bar or in the large garden, although the dining area was increased to service the growing demand for dining out in pubs, during the 1990’s.
As well as its primary role, the pub also played a pivotal role as a community hub, hosting events including charity fund raisers, quiz nights, regular coffee mornings enjoyed by village residents and friends; and the whole range of family celebrations marking the passing of time for local families.
In March 2020, like all other such pubs, the White Swan was closed due to the Covid restrictions.
